Strange Situation (1978) Ainsworth
Observe infants and parents to develop ways to categorize different attachment behaviors
7~8 months to 2 years
In the traditional Ainsworth et al. (1978) coding of the Strange Situation, secure infants are denoted as "Group B" infants and they are further sub classified as B1, B2, B3, and B4.[52] Although these sub groupings refer to different stylistic responses to the comings and goings of the caregiver, they were not given specific labels by Ainsworth and colleagues, although their descriptive behaviors led others (including students of Ainsworth) to devise a relatively "loose" terminology for these subgroups. B1's have been referred to as "secure-reserved", B2's as "secure-inhibited", B3's as "secure-balanced", and B4's as "secure-reactive".
The secure attachment
Flexible problem solving and flexible ways to interact with others. Securely attached child shows some distress when they are separated from the parents. Still able to sooth themselves to some degree. Once the parent comes back, they are excited to see their parents and give parents a big hug.
A parent
Be available to the child’s needs. But monitor your child’s temperament in order to provide the type of attachment the infant needs.
How parents exhibiting their emotions can really impact the child.
